Since 1964, Windcrest Golf Club, private at that time, has been one of the premier San Antonio 9 Hole Golf Courses. During the 60s and 70s the club had a golf membership of over 300 members, the majority retired military. Many of those members are still active in the club. Whether they are affiliated with the WWGA (Windcrest Women’s Golf Association) or the WMGA (Windcrest Men’s Golf Association), the Women’s Bid Whist Club, or just like the camaraderie of the club house, members make time to frequent the club because of it’s family atmosphere. The club plays host to a series of monthly tournaments for adults and quarterly for juniors via the Little Linksters and the First Tee. If you like competition, fun, challenge and family, come out and make Windcrest your home golf course.
Retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeants Arvel Seals and Gary Callison say “It’s a great community club that suitable for all ages, it’s easy to walk, considerably tough for 9 holes, the club has great camaraderie, staff and food are great.”
Jack “Rabbit” Wood is one of the oldest members of the club. He’s 89 years old and still playing. An old WWII Naval Submariner says that he loves the members and the Egyptian Geese here. Jack used to be the Assistant Manager of the club for about 12 years. Come on in and have a bag of popcorn with him. He’s got some good stories for you.
Horst Schaub is a retired Army Veteran from Giessen, Germany. He’s a member because the club is close to his house, there are friendly people there, they have lots of mixed tournaments, the course is senior friendly, and we have a friendly staff.
Club President Billy Cox says, “I’m a member of Windcrest Golf Club because of the friendly staff and the ease of getting on the course without long delays. Our course is easy to walk and is in good shape. It has some of the better greens in the city.”
Ron and Sandra Royal are members because of the family type atmosphere here at the club, and the members and staff are so friendly. Ron says that on this course he’s on most of the greens in regulation. They can also come out and get on at any time without a wait and the membership cost is very reasonable.
Flo Lysaght says that she’s a member because of the friendly and helpful members and staff. “The course is a tight course and it makes you use your short game. It is also convenient to play here because I live here in the neighborhood”.
David and Rita Caldwell are members because this is the closest golf club to their old golf club Westlake. Rita enjoys the Windcrest Golf Club Ladies Association that plays on Tuesdays and Thursdays and David plays with the Tuesday Sweeps. They both also enjoy the weekly “Oldies but Goodies weekly tournaments on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
